Revenue is at stake, and operators’ approaches to new propositions, shared data-tariff portfolios, potential new revenue streams, and handset-subsidy strategies across multiple markets will play a big role in how they share in the new eSIM ecosystem.
Mobile connectivity has great importance for developing new technologies. The shift towards IoT means that more devices become connected, causing Connectivity Service Providers to face challenges. eSIM technology will help to resolve these challenges. Here we answer the seven most important questions.
1. WHY IS ESIM IMPORTANT TO G+D MOBILE SECURITY?
Businesses must remain agile to succeed in a shifting marketplace and a connected society. As the Internet of Things grows, connectivity is affecting almost every market sector. eSIM management addresses the IoT requirements and digitalizes the end user experience. We have been pioneering eSIM management and delivered the first eSIM system to remotely manage eSIMs and provide a full digital experience.
In the IoT ecosystem many challenges are emerging. From physical limitations on size, operating environment, appearance whilst still being user friendly to operate, to the need for new business processes and cost structures to the challenge of mass producing low cost devices for global distribution eSIMs and eSIM management simplify the creation of a successful IoT ecosystem.
eSIMs and eSIM management are key components in our portfolio. Competency in security and profile creation allows us to be the trusted Identity Provider in the new eSIM ecosystem. G+D Mobile Security are qualified to support communications service providers and IoT device manufacturers.
eSIM is much more than a technology, it is the enabler for a new user experience
2. WHAT KEY PARTNERSHIPS ARE G+D MOBILE SECURITY INVOLVED WITH?
G+D Mobile Security has been working with MNOs on the future of eSIM management for uses cases in both the M2M/IoT and customer/ digitalization areas. In the IoT/ M2M area, we are working with Cisco/Jasper and Ericsson to provide interoperable and comprehensive connectivity management solutions.
In the consumer area, we partner and also have commercial systems in place with MNOs, OEMs and providers of BSS integration services to accelerate the introduction of consumer IoT devices. G+D Mobile Security is also setting up the eSIM standards with GSMA.
3. WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES IN THE IMPLEMENTATION OF ESIM?
On the consumer side:
eSIM ecosystem and technologies changes to MNO process and infrastructures in order to benefit of eSIM management for consumer devices. The lead time for this adoption is minimum 6 months. With an increasing number of eSIM devices, almost all majors OEMS are releasing or working on it. So it is urgent for MNOs to start the eSIM Management process and implementation.
In many countries regulatory issues make permanent roaming difficult/ impossible. Some of the largest automotive OEMs are using a dedicated SM-SR (subscription manager – secure routing) to manage their cars. Relocating the car to other countries could result in an ownership handover to the local MNOs SM-SR, and a subsequent profile download. The local MNO would then manage the car.
In the medium term, use cases will be a mixture of M2M/IoT and consumers, which could lead to an enrichment of consumer specification with M2M/IOT use cases, to the benefit of the various market segments.
The wide adoption of the new eSIM technology will change the industry and other adjoining aspects. The eSIM technology enables full digitalization, and this will influence marketing and sales, customer touchpoints, logistics, loyalty, contracts and prepaid markets among others.
4. WHAT ARE THE MOST INFLUENTIAL USE CASES FROM THE IOT/M2M AND CONNECTED CAR SPACES?
One of the use cases is the insurance use case: The enrichment of connected cars with eSIM management capabilities offer a remote management of connectivity in a later stage of the lifetime. eCall for automotive demands the flexibility offered by eSIM management. Taking the Russian eCall solution as an example: Besides allowing the car emergency communication to activate or switch MNOs in real time at the moment of an accident, the eSIM management allows for late provisioning of the correct emergency profile to the car when it is shipped to Russia.
Flexible deployment is needed for legal reasons. In countries e.g. Brazil and China a local MNO subscription is needed. Since the destination of a car needs to be flexible at the time of production, the flexibility and the remote management nature of eSIM lends itself well to manage this late provisioning.
5. HOW IS G+D MOBILE SECURITY ADDRESSING THE ISSUE OF GREATER FREEDOM OF CHOICE AND CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE?
We are supporting Connectivity Service Providers with solutions, in order to get users connected or to activate a device. We provide effective onboarding methods from web portals to vouchers and we allow them to digitalize the onboarding process while complying to new subscriber registration and regulations with secure remote identification. We also offers a fast-track solution AirOn Go, allowing MNOs to get ready for eSIM enablement for consumer devices. The AirOn Go package reduces lead time and complexity.
6. HOW HAS THE ESIM LANDSCAPE CHANGED AND HOW DO YOU PREDICT ITS FUTURE?
Recently the specifications have become more stable, and multinational OEMs are adding eSIM management to their products. On the consumer side, user friendliness and cost reduction have pushed MNOs to implement eSIM management. Now eSIM management is adopted by most MNOs and OEMS, Becoming more available, we expect major interest from enterprise customers asking for eSIM solutions from MNOs or service providers to manage their fleet of devices in a more efficient and flexible way.
MNOs have to ensure they can support consumer IoT devices by providing a functioning ecosystem to OEMs, as the devices will be sold via new retail channels and connectivity might be included in the purchase.
7. HOW DO YOU SEE THE ESIM DEVELOPMENT IN PRIMARY DEVICES?
G+D Mobile Security launched an eSIM management enabled device solution with NTT DOCOMO. Now, more than 100,000 eSIM activations per month are performed.
